Costs & Choosing Your Gate

How much do electric gates cost in the UK?

Every project is unique, but a professional installation typically starts from £3,000 for basic swing gates and £5,000+ for sliding systems. The final price depends on material choice (Aluminium, Steel, or Timber), the type of motor (underground vs. surface-mounted), and the complexity of the groundwork required.

Sliding vs. Swing gates - which is better for my property?
  • Swing Gates: Best for traditional driveways with plenty of flat space for the gates to open inwards.

  • Sliding Gates: The go-to solution for short driveways, steep slopes, or where space is tight. They offer excellent security but generally require more groundwork for the track or cantilever system.

What is the best gate solution for rural Yorkshire properties and farms?

For Yorkshire farms and estates, we recommend Heavy-Duty Steel or Composite-Clad gates. These withstand the harsh local weather and provide high security for livestock and machinery. For remote entrances, we often integrate GSM/4G access control, allowing you to open the gate from your phone anywhere on the farm.

Maintenance & Repairs

Why won’t my electric gate open?

Common culprits include obstructed photocells (dirt or leaves), flat remote batteries, or power surges. If the gate is making a grinding noise or moving slowly, it may be a mechanical fault or a motor issue. Note: Never force an automated gate manually unless it is in “manual release” mode.

How often should electric gates be serviced?

To ensure safety and reliability, residential gates should be serviced once every 12 months. For high-traffic commercial yards or gates exposed to heavy wind and dust on Yorkshire farms, we recommend a 6-month service interval.

Planning & Process

Do I need planning permission for electric gates?

In most cases, gates are “permitted development.” However, you generally need planning permission if:

  • The gate is over 1 metre high and next to a highway/footpath.

  • The gate is over 2 metres high elsewhere.

  • Your property is a Listed Building or in a Conservation Area. We always recommend checking with your local council if you’re unsure.

How long does a gate installation take?

A standard professional installation usually takes 1 to 2 days. This includes the mechanical fitting, electrical wiring, and the crucial safety “force testing” to ensure your gate complies with UK health and safety standards.

Security & Commercial Access

What are the best security options for commercial yards and small businesses?

We recommend palisade or mesh-reinforced steel gates paired with integrated access control. For West Yorkshire businesses, we often install intercoms with video verification and timed auto-closing features to ensure your premises are locked down the second the last staff member leaves.
